Many of us are likely to have experienced crime personally at some point in our lives.  Some of us, for example, may have committed a crime or been the victim of one.  Others may have experienced crimes as both offenders and victims.  Even if we have not had direct experience of crime, we will definitely have come across it second hand in the mass media, for instance in the press, TV news broadcasts and reality-based crime programmes such as Crimewatch.
